For the past 10 months, Porter has been collaborating with Abbott Nutrition to enhance its Modern Trade and e-commerce operations. We had a conversation with Mr. Hirak Deb, Customer Service & Logistics Head at Abbott Nutrition, to understand the challenges of traditional logistics and how Porter’s intervention has made a difference.
Abbott Nutrition’s Mission and Values
Abbott Nutrition has been developing innovative nutrition products for nearly a century. Our core mission remains the same: to help people live healthier lives at every stage. From infancy to adulthood, our products are designed to support immune health and overall well-being. We believe that good nutrition is the foundation of a healthy life.
Challenges in the Modern Trade & E-Commerce Ecosystem
Before partnering with Porter, we relied on a mix of fixed trip costs and per-kilogram rate models. This often led to inefficiencies, as we had to bear fixed costs even when order volumes were low.
Additionally, extensive coordination with our accounts was required to ensure smooth order fulfillment. Delays in unloading at distribution centers further added to the operational burden, increasing service costs and impacting our On-Time In-Full (OTIF) delivery rates.
Porter’s Tailored Logistics Solution
Porter, a leader in intra-city logistics, proposed an innovative solution to tackle these operational hurdles. Their approach focused on three key areas:
- Direct Delivery Model: Accommodating shipments of all sizes, including smaller ticket-size orders, ensuring cost efficiency.
- Improved Coordination: Establishing a clear line of communication with distribution centers to reduce detention rates and improve turnaround times.
- Cost Optimization: Streamlining logistics to bring down overall service expenses.
Implementation of Direct Delivery Channels
The transition to Porter’s model was seamless. We initiated a pilot phase at one of our distribution centers, ensuring that all stakeholders, including our Carrying & Forwarding Agency, were aligned on the new process flow and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Following a successful pilot, we expanded these operations to five more distribution centers.
Impact of Partnering with Porter
The collaboration with Porter led to significant improvements, including:
- Reduced servicing costs for Modern Trade and e-commerce accounts.
- Better OTIF levels and delivery efficiency, enhancing customer satisfaction.
Future Collaboration with Porter
We are currently in discussions to expand Porter’s logistics model to additional cities and towns. Furthermore, we are exploring customized plans for inter-city operations, which will help us cater to a larger account base in a more structured and efficient manner.
Industry Perspective on Logistics Transformation
India’s secondary transportation sector is largely fragmented, dominated by local and regional players. Porter’s tech-driven solutions have brought much-needed organization and efficiency to this space. The pandemic accelerated shifts in the FMCG and healthcare sectors, moving businesses from traditional to organized retail. Porter’s approach has been instrumental in bridging this gap with effective and scalable solutions.
The Future of Logistics for Modern Trade & E-Commerce
As the logistics industry evolves, there is a growing need for differentiated services and data-driven decision-making. Companies like Porter, with their technology-focused solutions, are paving the way for a more structured and efficient logistics ecosystem.
